I have a lot of sequences that I put a lot of work into on my old JW50. I'd like to port them onto my XP60, but have not had good results saving the MIDI file on the old keyboard and having the new XP play them - the timing is all off.

Could I use my JW50 as the sequencer, and use the XP60 as sort of the "sound module"? I haven't really tried hooking up keyboards via MIDI, but both keyboards are MIDI-capable.

I don't need this for live work, just for some recordings, so I don't mind if the solution is a little convoluted. I just don't want to resequence these songs from scratch, particularly after working so hard on them.

Suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

-Keith

You should have no problem doing this. MIDI out from the JW50 to the MIDI in on the XP60. Set the MIDI channels of the parts on the XP to correspond to the proper channels on the JW50 (or vice versa, whichever is easier).

You may experience problems with articulation and that sort of thing playing back your sequences using instruments you were not using when you sequenced, e.g., if an attack is slower on the new instrument, or the decay faster, or the sustain longer, or whatever. Lots of variables.

There's a chapter in the XP60 manual about using the XP60 as a sound module, i.e., playing it from an external sequencer.

Okay, let's make this more difficult. Is this scenario possible?

I've got maybe 10-12 tracks active in a sequence on my JW50. I like how SOME of the tracks sound, but I'd like more modern/realistic sounds for a few tracks, like the piano and sax. I've got piano and sax sounds that I love in the XP60.

Can I use the JW50 to drive the XP60 as a sound module, and only use SOME of the tracks assigned to the XP60, or is it all-or-nothing?

Thanks as always!

It's not all or nothing.

Just turn off the MIDI Rx (receive) switches for the parts in the XP60 performance you *don't* want to accept/respond to MIDI data coming from your sequencer.

You can also turn off the MIDI Tx (transmit) switches (presumably) in your JX50 for those channels you do *not* want sent to the XP80.

See your XP60 manual p. 183, "Playing the XP-80 sound source from an external MIDI device."

Have I understood your question correctly?

Re: doubling: I think the site got hosed recently or something. It wouldn't even come up for me for, like, three days or so.

Faulty MIDI connection, probably.
